Africa-focused legal intelligence provider Afriwise has acquired its South African competition LawExplorer in a move to expand its legal database and enhance its artificial intelligence capabilities.
The deal, which closed August 1, will see LawExplorer’s team join Afriwise, with the combined entity continuing operations under the Afriwise brand. Webber Wentzel advised Afriwise while LawExplorer did not appoint an external counsel.
The transaction value was not disclosed. Afriwise CEO and founder Steven Backer said it was funded through the company’s 2024 financing round and debt funding. Founded in 2018, Afriwise has raised over $7 million in equity and debt.
Since 2004, LawExplorer has provided legal, regulatory, and compliance products and services to JSE-listed companies, including telecommunications giant MTN and grocery retail chain Pick n Pay. Among its major offerings is Sentinel, a regulatory alerting tool.
